With HIV: antiretroviral therapy (ART)

Nowadays there are so many means available for antiretroviral therapy, that a fitting and side-effect free combination can be found for each patient’s situation. Progress controls monitor the effectiveness and tolerance.

With regular ingestion the therapy is, in general, effective for decades. Under total suppression of the viral load and in the absence of further sexual diseases; the HIV transmission risk is, in a committed partnership, classified as being „insignificantly small».

The beginning of the therapy is dependant on the time of the diagnosis. (Exceptional case: primary infection, see below), the immune situation (helper cell level,-progression) and individual factors (such as additional illnesses, age, etc.). In most cases a combination of three drugs are administered in the easiest way with a tablet being taken once a day, dependancy on intake of food is noted only in isolated cases. A cure for HIV, is worldwide subject to an extreme exceptional case.

With an early therapy start, (in the first days/weeks of an HIV-infection), a stable immune system has been observed in isolated cases, after the first therapy years even without ART. Even outside of these „special situations“ HIV patients can expect to reach the same life expectancy as non-infected people; especially if risk factors for premature ageing of the cardiovascular system is avoided (no smoking and treatment for high blood pressure).
